On 15th October 2024, ID-Pal, in association with AML Intelligence, hosted a webinar on identity verification and the rising challenge of deepfakes. Moderated by Colum Lyons, CEO and founder of ID-Pal, the session featured insights from leading professionals in the fields of digital identity, compliance, and technology innovation. Each panellist brought their own expertise to the discussion.
Introductions
David Birch, Global Ambassador at Consult Hyperion, is a pioneer in digital identity with decades of innovation. David’s work continues to shape the landscape, and his views on the intersection of AI and fraud prevention were pivotal.
“David is not only a thought leader but also a published author with a deep understanding of the challenges surrounding digital identity and deepfakes,” said Colum Lyons. He jokingly added, “Some of us would only dream of having a tiny bit of David’s success.”
Alison Donnelly, Director at fscom, a governance, risk, and compliance firm, is a prominent voice in financial services, regularly recognised for her contributions to payment solutions and regulatory compliance.
Introducing her, Colum remarked, “If there’s anyone who’s collecting more awards than the rest of us put together, it’s Alison. Her expertise and influence in compliance make her the go-to leader in our field.”
Konstantin Simonchik, Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer at ID R&D, brought a unique perspective on deepfake detection to the session. Colum introduced him by saying, “Konstantin is kind of like the uncle at a birthday party who has magic tricks – you always want to ask him to show one. And I’ll explain that analogy shortly.”
Key Takeaways from the Panel Discussion
The discussion covered a wide array of topics, with each panellist offering valuable insights:
- Deepfakes in Identity Verification: David Birch emphasised the sophistication of AI-generated fake identities, which present a significant threat to businesses reliant on robust KYC (Know Your Customer) processes. He highlighted how digital identity frameworks are crucial in mitigating these risks.
- Regulatory Considerations: Alison Donnelly discussed how regulatory frameworks are evolving to address the growing risks of deepfakes. She underscored the importance of vigilance, transparency, and regular audits for financial institutions to stay ahead of potential fraudulent actors.
- Technological Solutions: Konstantin Simonchik shared insights on AI and machine learning’s role in deepfake detection, demonstrating how advanced algorithms can differentiate between legitimate and synthetic identities, thereby enhancing verification security.
Concerns & Questions on Deepfakes
The audience raised several thought-provoking questions, highlighting widespread concern about deepfakes. For instance, one participant asked, “What role does AI play in combating deepfakes, and do current technologies provide sufficient protection?” The panellists agreed that while AI is crucial, the rapid advancement in deepfake technology means verification systems must evolve continuously to maintain effectiveness. Another question explored best practices for safeguarding customer privacy in the face of deepfakes. The panellists suggested a balance between security and user experience, with an emphasis on transparency and consent.
Other questions in the webinar addressed NFC technology, real-world examples demonstrating the impact of advanced fraud detection, and the importance of detection rates and transaction value in building effective fraud prevention strategies.
ID-Pal’s CTO, Robert O’Farrell reflected on the topics, stating: “New attack vectors emerge daily in today’s digital landscape. Many organisations lack the technology to detect these threats, and even those that do often don’t share data. Without comprehensive data, fraud detection rate estimates remain speculative. We do know, however, the critical vectors to protect against. One customer, for instance, saved £700,000 using ID-Detect to detect and prevent fraud. This emphasises that it’s not just about detection rates but the value of transactions. A €5 fraudulent transaction might seem minor, but a million such instances or one worth €5,000,000 can be significant.
NFC technology, while helpful, is not a complete solution. If a deepfake passes the liveness check, even a legitimate NFC-chipped ID can be misused. Not all NFC IDs include biometric data, as chip content varies, meaning authenticity doesn’t always confirm ownership.
To counter these sophisticated threats, a multi-faceted approach is needed. Organisations should use advanced technologies, share intelligence, and implement robust, beyond-standard checks.”
Tom Cruise Joins ID-Pal Webinar!
Following an extended demonstration in which Konstantin appeared convincingly as Tom Cruise, a live poll was launched to gauge the audience’s awareness. Remarkably, 87% of attendees did not realise they had been watching a deepfake. This outcome underscored the challenge even knowledgeable viewers face in distinguishing authentic content from manipulated media, emphasising the need for robust deepfake detection technology.

The conversation around deepfakes and identity verification is far from over, and ID-Pal will continue to explore this topic through future webinars and industry collaborations. In the meantime, you can watch the full webinar on demand here.
