Meet Roho, Our Elephant in the Room

ID-Pal > Resources > Insight > Meet Roho, Our Elephant in the Room

On World Mental Health Day, we’d like to introduce Roho, a new member of the ID-Pal team. Inspired by the Swahili term for “heart,” “spirit” or “soul,” Roho symbolises connection, support, and the essence of community.

The Meaning Behind Roho

More than a sculpture, Roho is specifically designed to be a friend in our ID-Pal office, radiating positivity and hope. With Roho’s heart prominently displayed on both sides, it is a bold declaration of our ethos and its handprint inviting a moment of connection, offers a safe haven, and reminding us that it’s perfectly okay to pause and acknowledge when things aren’t okay.

Roho will not only enhance our office space but also resonate with the hearts and minds of all who encounter it, embodying the joy, fun, spirit, and collective resilience of our ID-Pal family. Roho reminds us that together, as a herd, we’re always stronger. And if the weight ever feels too heavy, you are never alone. We’re here, we’re all ears, ready to support, and walk towards brighter days, together.

The Creative Process

Roho’s design was the result of a collaborative effort by mixed-department teams at ID-Pal, sparking lively competition and plenty of fun throughout the process. Teams poured creativity and thoughtfulness into their designs, with the excitement peaking during the final presentations to the ID-Pal executive committee judges.

The energy and camaraderie made it a memorable experience for everyone involved. Ultimately, there could only be one winning team, and their concept was brought to life by José A. Alvarez, Peter Davitt, Emma Hayes, Sarah Corish, Đuro Mandinić, and Valeriy Motornyy.

Once the initial designs had been decided then it was time for the design to be masterfully realised by artist Joanna Figasinska, in partnership with the Elephant in the Room Movement, led by Brent Pope and Dave Southern.

A Movement That Matters

The Elephant in the Room Movement has been using art to promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma in workplaces. By creating elephant sculptures that spark conversations and encourage openness, the movement has become a powerful advocate for mental well-being with Roho becoming a proud addition to this initiative.

With Roho now a part of the ID-Pal office, we are reminded of the importance of keeping mental health at the forefront of our conversations. Roho represents more than just a sculpture; it is a lasting symbol of our collective commitment to fostering a supportive and open workplace culture.

Welcome to the herd, Roho! 🐘
